World Music Suite Three is a collection of eight folk songs from around the world, with considerable emphasis on indigenous music. The percussion instruments are at times specific (as in the Ukrainian Oy Khodyla) and at times general (as in Lukey’s Boat) – whatever is appropriate and available. All percussion may be played by choir members if desired. Although the cello is technically optional, it adds considerably to the overall effect of the suite.
World Music Suite Three was commissioned by the Musica Viva Singers of Ottawa, Marg Stubington director, and was first presented in 2011 in a joint concert with Cantiamo Girls Choir, Jackie Hawley director.
Incantation - Peru
The opening to World Music Suite Three was inspired by the healing incantations of Shaman Luis Ricardo Tsakimp Ashanka. He descends from a long line of healers living in the mountains of Peru. Ricardo’s melody is heard note for note in Incantation.
Malaika (My Angel) – Kenya
Authorship of this tender love song is not entirely clear. It was first recorded by Kenyan musician Fadhili William a half century ago, and now its beautifully haunting melody is known the world over. The lyrics are in both Swahili and English.
Lukey’s Boat - Newfoundland
This rollicking coastal song contains some new material – a couple of verses that “Lukey” himself wrote to counter what he felt were slightly derogatory verses written by “Aunt” Virtue Keen. Aha, me riddle I day!
El Prisionero (The Prisoner) - Spain
The text for this Spanish romancero – a popular literary genre concerned generally with (mis)adventure, social problems and people with heroic qualities – comes from Castile. Its ‘sad’ minor key and its slow but highly lyrical melody in triple meter along with its angst-filled text all give this woeful song an unmistakably Spanish flavour.
Oy, Khodyla Divchyna (Girl’s Dance Song) - Ukraine
A sprightly and rustic traditional song well known in The Ukraine. The musical phrases are three rather than four bars in length, creating forward moving impulse as the song progresses. A young girl talks to her geese…
Magas Kösziklának (Love’s Anodyne) – Hungary
This lush, dark and slow Hungarian love song is from the folk music collections made by Zoltàn Kodaly, a contemporary of Béla Bartók, Its gorgeous melody drips with melancholy and is the inspiration for a sumptuously romantic setting. The (optional) cello adds a lush counter melody.
Small Days - Guyana
This children’s song, intended to accompany children’s games, is actually a collection of enchanting tunes as sung by Guyanian Vanessa London. Enjoy it as a child!
Poi-E (Māori) - New Zealand)
‘Poi’ refers to a traditional Maori dance or game performed with a soft ball fastened to a string swung around the body while singing. The energetic Poi E was written in 1982 by Māori linguist Ngoi Pewhairangi and musician Dalvanius Prime as a means of instilling cultural pride in young Māori, and as a response to New Zealand’s economically and spiritually depressed Māori region. It worked! Poi-E was danced to in the streets throughout New Zealand and quickly rose to the top of the pop charts.
